Electric assist systems compared

HP Velotchnic offer two different power assist options with all their bikes and trikes; the fully automatic Shimano STEPS with an electronic shifting Alfine Di2 8 speed hub, or the or the hub mounteds GO SwissDrive which is combined with eiter a conventional 27 speed Shimano XT derailleur or with a crank mounted Pinion Gearbox.

They are both extremely good systems, which makes it very hard to choose between them. Each has some advantages however.

Are you mainly riding in the city? As a commuter, shopping, or just to be mobile? City traffic means constant starting and stopping. Shimano’s automatic transmission is not only a comfort benefit, but brings a safety benefit; you can fully concentrate on the traffic. The purring of the motor is barely recognizable over the noise of the cars while riding

Are you riding in challenging and hilly terrain? Then the overheating protection level of the STEPS is a real advantage. With automatic gears, the transmission always runs in the most efficient range allowing long climbs with heavy loads to be completed without stopping.

Away from busier roads, shifting needs to be done less often as you travel at a steadier tempo. If you wish to hear the nature as you ride, rather than listening to the humming of your motor, then the silent GO SwissDrive plays out its advantages of the rear drive motor hub. And only this system comes with an electric reverse gear!

If long distance is one of your priorities, then the GO SwissDrive system allows you to mount a second battery to double your range. Tourers might also feel more comfortable having standard XT drivetrain components since even the smallest bike shops should have replacement parts. Its possible to carry a spare battery for the Steps system but you would have to put it in your pannier and swap it over as needed.
