Tout Terrain now supply a steel twenty niner with a Pinion gearbox. If you want a bike with wheels big enough to roll over everything and gears to give you the widest, most reliable shifting, here it is.
The Pinion transmission was developed by designers who had previously been working on transmissions for Porsche. Either 12 or 18 gears deliver a huge gear spectrum with a even good spread of gear ratios and the central positioning of the transmission provides a well balanced bike and therefore improved handling over heavy gear hubs.
It is weather sealed and virtually maintenance free as all the parts run in an oil bath; Pinion recommend changing the oil once a year or every 10 000km. In use the changes are almost instantaneous, shifting through multiple gears takes no time at all and it is very tolerant of shifting under load, with no intermediate neutral gears. A standard single speed cassette rear hub makes for a robust rear wheel. The frame incorporates a unique system for tensioning the chain - Tout Terrains innovative TBA system allows the gearbox to pivot on two central bolts, which tensions the transmission from the gearbox end and enables the use of belt drive transmission.
The Gold specification features the Pinion P1.18 with 18 evenly-spaced gears with a range of a 636% and even steps of 11.5%. With the Silver level specification you get the P1.12 which has 12 evenly-spaced gears with a range of a 600% and even steps of 17.7%. It is possible to order an upgrade from 12 to 18 gears.
The frame on the Tanami Xplores frame is made from lightweight and durable CrMo steel (Dedacciai) with an stainless steel rack with a load bearing capacity of 40 kg. The dropouts and all of the braze-ons are made from rust-proof stainless steel and the frame is then powder coated in Tout Terrains own facility to maximise corrosion resistance. Available in four very civilised colours or you can choose from any of Tout Terrains stock colours for extra charge.
